Star College High matrics excel in NSC exams

Star College Boys' High learners, Damien Naidoo (10 A's), Darshen Bhawan (12 A's) and Kirsten Mopp (10 A's) were the top three matric learners at the school.

STAR College in Westville produced brilliant matric results in the 2016 National Senior Certificate examinations again.

According to the school principal, Osman Karaayvaz, the school achieved a 100 per cent pass and a 100 per cent Bachelor Degree pass rate.

Darshen Bhawan achieved 12 distinctions – English, Afrikaans, maths, physical science, life sciences, IT, Life Orientation, religious studies, geography, history and accounting.

Damien Naidoo had 10 distinctions in English, Afrikaans, maths, Life Orientation, physical science, accounting, life sciences, IT, religious studies and AP Maths.

Kirsten Mopp also received 10 distinctions in English, Afrikaans, maths, Life Orientation, physical science, accounting, life sciences, IT, religious studies and EGD (Engineering, Graphics and Design).

All three learners represented South Africa in the International Physical Science Olympiad in Switzerland in July and managed to keep a balance in their life, but at the same time achieve excellent results.

Damien and Darshen will study actuarial science at UCT, except for Kirsten who will be studying the subject at the University of Stellenbosch this year.

Their advice to the Grade 12 learners this year is to work hard, study from the beginning of the year, study past papers and believe in yourself.

Sandile Ndlela, who was a bursary recipient of the upliftment programme at the school, wrote nine subjects and achieved eight distinctions in isiZulu, maths, Life Orientation, EGD, IT, life sciences, physical sciences and religion studies.

He will be studying computer engineering at the University of Pretoria.

Four learners,  Pryaska Sukdeo, Chiara Rakcoomar, Saiyuri Naidoo and Lukrisha Ramadu of Star College Girls’ High each achieved eight distinctions.

Pryska looks forward to studying occupational therapy at UKZN, Lukrisha will study law and UKZN, while Chiara and Saiyuri will pursue actuarial science at either the University of Stellenbosch or UCT.

The girls agreed that the exams were challenging but late nights, lots of coffee and junk food coupled with support of study groups led them to achieving their best.

They also thanked parents, teachers and all those who supported them to make their goal a reality.

Karaayvaz congratulated the Matric Class of 2016 and their teachers on their outstanding matric results.

“I am so proud of you all. These results illustrate your specific talents which have been developed to your full potential, by your inspirational, dedicated teachers.

“You have excelled not only academically but also in your moral development as fine young adults walking into your new lives.

“I wish the matric learners of 2016 much success as you enter further education and careers. You’ve done well to get where you are and I’m sure you know that your matric exam results marks another important milestone in your life. God bless you all,” said Karaayvaz.
