New Germany generator diesel spill is hazardous, says resident

New Germany resident, Jules Viljoen said the 15 ton generator outside Telkom is a health hazard and danger to the residents and school children.

THE diesel spillage from a generator that was allegedly erected by Telkom, in Regal Road, New Germany, has angered a resident who said correct procedures were not followed.

Jules Viljoen, who has been a resident in the area for 14 years, said the generator weighs about 15 tons and is a health hazard and danger to residents.

“This road is very small, built for five-ton cars. The generator shakes and it is standing askew. Who is going to take responsibility?

“The road is already damaged because of this and there is a diesel spill and it stinks,” said Viljoen.

He said he has called Telkom about this matter and nothing has been done.

“Schools will be opening soon and we have a primary school around the corner and other children use this road to and from school.”

The resident said he has worked with generators and what he sees is unacceptable and dangerous.

“When putting up a generator, safety precautions should be followed and this one does not even have a proper drip tray and the diesel is spilling on to the ground.

“The smell becomes unbearable when it rains and this is rainy season. For how long are we going to be forced to endure this stinky smell. Besides the people, this spillage is also affecting the wildlife and the environment as a whole.”

The Highway Mail contacted Telkom’s head office on Monday, 8 January and they said they will be sending someone to investigate the matter.
