Nicole makes a mark in writing comp

Young poet, Nicole Deetlefs.

QUEENSBURGH Girls’ High School Grade 12 learner, Nicole Deetlefs (right), participated in a poem writing competition and two of her poems were published in the Grondwoorde 2017.

The competition is the brainchild of Wouter Gilgenhuys and is open to learners in KZN.

Learners had to submit a poem in each of three categories and this year the categories were: Shaka Zulu’s mother, Sheila Cussons and Mother, Sister and Daughter.

One of the three poems had to be a eulogy.

There were 137 entrants from 40 schools.

The awards ceremony was held at Durban North College on Saturday, 18 November.

The Department of Arts and Culture sponsored prizes and the overall winner received R10 000 while the runners-up each received R2 500 and a copy of the Anthology.
