Report crimes without fear say Bellair SAPS

Bellair SAPS communications officer, W/O Prakash Kumar.

ALTHOUGH various crimes are being reported, Bellair SAPS have noticed that people may be intimidated when it comes to reporting cases that involve police officers as recent information suggests there are crooks masquerading as members of the SAPS.

“Often, people fear being intimidated by these police officers, if or when confronted again. In most cases, these “police officers” are not employed by the South African Police Service.”

“It has been reported that residents are being stopped by these “police officers” who then demand cash in lieu of being charged for an offence. On investigation it has been found that these were criminals impersonating police officers,” said Bellair SAPS communications officer, Prakash Kumar.

According to Prakash, this creates frustration and a sense of disgust, disappointment and disgrace from the public towards loyal, honest and dedicated police officers who serve the community with integrity and are undeserving of this stigma.

For the purpose of creating a safe and secure environment for the people of this suburb, SAPS Bellair will begin a safety awareness programme in to regain the trust of the people and prevent further crimes of this nature.

“In order to determine the true identity of police officers who intimidate or bully members of the public, we urge that you take the following precautions in the event of being approached by such people,” said Kumar.
