Keep your vehicle safe from rim and tyre thieves

A MALVERN resident recently woke up to an unpleasant surprise when he discovered that his car had been stripped of its rims and tyres.

According to Malvern SAPS communications officer, W/O Radhika Marimuthu, this trend has increased in the Malvern area, even though the car was parked in a secure yard.

She said it is even easier to steal tyres and rims from cars parked on pavements overnight.

“Suspects not only steal rims and tyres but also the property that is left in vehicles overnight like wallets, laptops and cash. Personal property of value should be removed from vehicles and not kept in sight. This entices suspects not only to steal rims and tyres but also to break into the vehicles,” added W/O Marimuthu.

She said suspects also gain entry into properties by jumping over fences and derailing gates.

“Dogs should not be kept chained but rather left to roam the property at night as this thwarts suspects,” she added.

“If you don’t park inside a closed garage, rather park your vehicle close to the wall as possible so that hinders movement of the suspects and marking your rims will assist in identification later on if they are stolen and later recovered,” said W/O Marimuthu.

Station Commander, Lt-Col Valarine Reddy said the second-hand good stores in the Malvern area have been combed for stolen rims and tyres but none have been found which indicates that sales of this stolen property is occurring outside the Malvern area.
