Westville resident held up at gun point during home invasion

A WESTVILLE man was held up at gunpoint during a home invasion on Sunday.

According to Andreas Mathios from Blue Security,  a resident in Rockdale Avenue noticed that a white Mercedes Benz parked outside his home and assumed that family members had arrived to visit him.

“He opened the gate without making sure who he was letting in and several suspects entered the property and held up the resident at gunpoint, forcing him to lie down on the floor. They loaded a flat screen television into their vehicle and fled the scene. No injuries were reported,” said Mathios.

Mathios said it was unclear what other valuables may have been stolen during the robbery and Westville SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

He advised residents to be extremely cautious before opening up security gates to let visitors onto their property.

“If someone rings your doorbell, even if you are expecting family to visit or a contractor to arrive to work at your property, always physically check by looking out of the window to see who is standing or parked outside.

“If your gate is not visible from your house, consider installing a CCTV camera, that can also be linked up to your home alarm system, so you can safely check who is outside before opening up. A little security consciousness with attention to seemingly small details goes a long way to protecting your family from crime,” warned Mathios.
