Convivial Comrades spirit prevails in Pinetown

ALMOST 20 000 runners converged in Pietermaritzburg at 5.30am to start the highly anticipated ultra-marathon on Sunday.

Supporters also woke up early to cheer the runners along the route. In Josiah Gumede Road, Pinetown, crowds gathered with their camp chairs, picnic baskets and braai stands to support the runners.

Two-times Comrades champ, Bongumusa Mthembu, took the title once again on Sunday’s down run in a time of 5:26:39.

The 35-year-old from Bulwer, Midlands region, won himself a R440 000 cash prize among others.

Mthembu first won the Comrades Marathon in 2014 and he took the title again last year.

This year, he also raised the South African flag high winning the 93rd edition of the ultra-marathon

Gauteng runner, Ann Ashworth, won the women’s race in a time of 6:10:04.

Ashworth is the founder of the Massmart Running Club, a women’s only running team launched in October last year.

The rest of the field, made up of runners from all walks of life, are to be congratulated for completing this mammoth marathon.
