KEARSNEY College travelled to the Highveld for their annual sports fixture against St Benedict’s.

The rugby match started well when fullback Jacques Odendaal launched a counter attack for centre Robbie Koenig to score. The hosts responded with a penalty to trail 3-5.

Kearsney dominated the next 15 minutes and scored two spectacular unconverted tries through winger Gcina Gumede and Odendaal for a 15-3 lead.

Bennies had an opportunity with a rare visit to the visitors’ quarter; scoring an unconverted try to shrink Kearsney’s lead to 15-8.

Kearsney applied good pressure from the kick off. Odendaal scored and converted his second try after hard work by the forwards and good offloading skills by centre Derrick Marshall.

Kearsney started the second half well, displaying some good structure and patience. They were rewarded with a Marshall try, following a good break by flyhalf Taine Muirhead. Odendaal converted and the lead stretched to 29-8.

Kearsney built a handy lead, just to relax and let the opposition back into the match. Bennies scored two further converted tries for a 22-29 deficit.

Kearsney applied good pressure on the opposition for the next period until Odendaal scored an opportunistic try.

Scrumhalf Matthew Hayden executed a quick lineout throw to Odendaal who ran close to 50m, darting his way through many opponents to score a memorable individual try in the corner.

With the altitude seemingly affecting Kearsney, the hosts capitalised with a converted try after some good interplay between forwards and backs, to produce a final score of 34-29 to Kearsney.

Hockey

Kearsney 1st XI travelled to Johannesburg at the weekend for two tough fixtures against 25th ranked St Benedict’s and number one ranked Jeppe, playing two games within 16 hours of each other, after a long bus trip.

Friday night’s game against St Benedict’s started well, with Kearsney going 2-0 up early, through goals from skipper Guy Morgan and Liam Maguire. St Benedict’s pulled back, however, to level the game at 2-2 through two well-taken penalty corners. The second half saw Kearsney start strongly and manage the game better. They converted again through Dane Mertsch and Chase Kelly, to wrap up a 4-2 win.

The following morning Kearsney played Jeppe who are having a great season and are currently the top ranked schoolboy hockey team in the country. Steven Conway celebrated his 50th cap for Kearsney’s 1st XI. This turned out to be a fantastic game for the visitors, who created many scoring opportunities and eventually drew the game 3-3 with a Ben Proctor hat-trick.
