10 important tweets from the #100MenMarch against gender violence

South African men from government, business, labour, faith-based organisations, non-profit and media organisations took to the streets to support the movement to curb violence against women and children. The “100 Years of Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu: Men’s March Against Violence on Women and Children” began at Church Square in Pretoria at 10 am and made its way to the southern lawns of the Union Buildings.

The government-organised march was almost overshadowed by Kwaito singer and ANC member Arthur Mafokate who did an interview with a Sunday newspaper pledging that he would attend the march. Mafokate is currently facing assault charges involving his ex-girlfriend Busiswa “Cici” Twala. He appeared at Midrand Margistrates Court today a day after withdrawing from the march. This week, the musician lost his job as a non-executive board member of the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (Samro) board “in light of the serious assault accusations leveled against him.” The #100Menmarch released a statement distancing themselves from him claiming that they had not invited him:
