Armed men ransack Westville home

ONE of the three men who robbed a house in Chearsley Avenue, Westville was arrested after a quick response from police.

According to Westville SAPS communications officer, Capt Elizabeth Squires, the owner of the house heard his domestic worker screaming on Wednesday, 29 August.

Squires said the homeowner was confronted by an armed man when he went to check what was happening.

“Two men appeared, they ransacked the house and loaded the goods into a basket then onto the back of a bakkie. They failed to start the vehicle so the suspects fled leaving the basket behind,” explained Squires.

She said the suspects then jumped into a Ford which belonged to one of the suspects.

“Members from the Pinetown OCC unit responded to the complaint. They were informed by a guard from ADT that the vehicle had left the house and a description of the vehicle circulated.

“Cst Zain Rangila and Cst Jeandre Welgemoed blocked off the entry and exit route on Roger Sishi which leads into Clermont. Not long afterwards, the suspects spotted the police and turned onto the M19, police gave chase and managed to apprehend the suspect in his vehicle. Three cellphones were recovered,” said Squires.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Westville SAPS on charges of house robbery. The 29-year-old appeared in court and will appear again on Friday, 7 September.

The case is being investigated by Pinetown Trio Task Team and Cst Zain Rangila and Cst Jeandre Welgemoed were commended for their swift response and apprehending the suspect.
