A MAN was shot and killed in an alleged robbery in Pinetown on Saturday morning.
The Pinetown cluster communications officer, Captain Bongumusa Manqele, said a driving instructor was sitting in his passenger seat in a stationary car at a traffic light on the corner of Josiah Gumede and Anderson Road.
The instructor said an unknown man pointed a screw driver at the woman sitting in the driver’s seat and attempted to switch off the ignition.
“A second suspect placed a knife on the instructor’s throat and demanded his cellphone. There were more suspects pillaging their car from the backseat. The suspects then fled the scene with the instructor’s cellphone. The instructor drew his firearm and shot at the suspect who had his cellphone,” said Manqele.
According to Werner Vermaak of ER24, paramedics arrived at the scene, at the intersection of Josiah Gumede Road and Moodie Street, where the suspect’s body was found, after 9am.
“It is understood that an attempted robbery took place and a man, believed to be a suspect, was shot and killed,” said Vermaak.
The man had a gunshot wound in his left armpit and was declared dead on scene.
“A woman, believed to be a learner driver, was found at the scene, traumatised. It is understood that she was assaulted during the attempted robbery at the intersection,” said Vermaak.
