Pinetown CPF meeting reveals burglaries and robberies on the rise

PROPERTY related crimes such as theft is the largest contributor to the crime numbers.

Crime statistics were discussed at a recent meeting attended by various neighbourhood watch representatives at the Pinetown Sector 3 CPF quarterly meeting.

The meeting, held recently at Benjamin Primary School, was well attended and 50 residents joined patrollers from the Pinetown South area and SAPS, Metro, Ashley Watch (ARNW), Pineridge Watch (PRNW), Mariannhill Watch (MHNW), Glen Park Watch (GPNW) and Hatton Estates Watch (HENW).

“Excluding Mariannhill and Caversham Glen, the neighbourhood watches recorded more than 200 incidents during the past seven months, which equates to at least one incident every day,” said patroller, Tony Wardle.

He said burglary and robbery at residential premises was the second biggest problem recorded, followed by attempted house break ins.

“There is an increasing trend in this type of crime and, as Christmas approaches, residential burglary is expected to increase further. Statistically, the majority of these crimes happen between midnight and early morning, followed by afternoons.

The roads hardest hit included: Underwood Road, Maurice Nichols Road, 7th Avenue, Mariannhill Road, Caversham Road and Wood Road.”

According to Wardle, these roads provide an easy access and escape route for criminals onto railway lines and main arterial getaway routes.

During the meeting, the various watches were thanked for the tireless work they do, as the members volunteer their time with no pay.

“Volunteers do not only help reduce the crime in the respective areas, but also offer counselling support, do traffic control when accidents occur and assist to alert Metro about bylaw related issues,” said Wardle.

The next community meeting is planned for February 2019.

“Please make every effort to attend these briefing meetings, they are for the benefit of the greater Pinetown South community, and it only takes 90 minutes of your time.

Residents are urged to contact their respective neighbourhood watches as there is no doubt the watches play a pivotal role in keeping communities safe, and they need the support of the communities that they serve,” added Wardle.
